THE PINECONE SOLUTION
My name is Dan. I live with my mother and my brother Ben in a house near a forest. One autumn morning, Mom tells us to go to the forest and cut down a tree.

"Why do you want a tree?" We ask

"Because we need wood for the fire." She says

Ben looks up at the blue sky. "But it's not cold!"

"We don't need the firewood today." Says Mom

"When do we need the wood?" We ask

"We need it for the winter. It's very cold in the winter."

Ben finds the axe and we walk into the forest. There are lots of trees but they are all very big. "Where do we find small trees?" Ben asks

First we walk through the forest and down the path. We can't see any small trees. Then we go around a lake and across a river. We climb up a hill. Finally, we see some small trees next to some rocks.

"How about that tree?" Ben asks
"Perfect!" I answer

Ben has the axe in his hand. Suddenly, a big pinecone falls from the tree and hits his head. "Ouch!" Ben falls to the ground. I look up and another pinecone falls. Then another pinecone falls, and then another. Soon there are a lots of pinecones on the ground.

I pick up the axe. Suddenly, the sun disappears and the forest is dark. We hear a voice. "Stop! Put down your axe!"

Ben and I look around. "Who are you?" I ask "What do you want?"

"We are the trees. Why do you want to cut us down?"
"Because we need firewood" I answer. "It's very cold in winter"
"Yes, the winter is cold. But we are living trees. Do not cut us down!" The trees say.

Another pinecone falls and hits Ben on the head. I pick up the pinecone and say, "Let's go!" We run away.

We run through the forest and up the path. Then we stop. We see that there are lots of pinecones and branches on the ground.

"We can collect pinecones and branches for our fire!" Ben says
"That's a good idea!" I say "Cutting down a tree is hard work, but collecting branches and pinecones is easy. And we take care of the forest".

We collect lots of branches and pinecones. Then we walk home. Our mother is very happy to see us. Now we are ready for the cold winter.
